Head Coach Ameer Ismail brings a wealth of knowledge to the Iowa Barnstormers organization with experience both playing and coaching. Collegiately, Ismail is a 20016 All-American and Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year at Western Michigan University. Ismail led the nation with 17 sacks and 25.5 tackles for loss during the 2006 season. He graduated as the school and MAC single-season sack record holder. He holds the NCAA Division I record for sacsk in a game with six in a 41-27 win over Ball State University. During his senior season, the Western Michigan defense was ranked first in the NCAA in sacks (46) and interceptions (24), finished third in the nation forcing 34 turnovers, and ranked sixth in rush defense yielding only 2.6 yards per carry and 76 yards per game. After a brief stint in the NFL with both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ismail found the indoor game playing linebacker for several teams including the Jacksonville Sharks (AFL), Milwaukee Mustangs (AFL), Tri-Cities Fever (IFL), Bloomington Edge (IFL), and Chicago Slaughter (IFL). Turning his attention toward coaching in 2014, Ismail served as defensive coordinator for teams including the Cedar Rapids Titans, Tri-Cities Fever, and Spokane Empire of the IFL. His first head coaching appearance came in 2017 with the Bloomington Edge (CIF) and in 2018, he led the first-year Massachusetts Pirates (NAL) to an 11-5 regular season record and was named the NAL Coach of the Year. Ismail also has experience coaching high school and football teams.
