Barnstormers Defense Shines Against Kansas CityDes Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Barnstormers re-vamped defense came together in what resulted in their best outing of the season on Saturday night, paving the way for a 48-40 victory over the Kansas City Command. The win was the Barnstormers second straight as they now improve to 5-11 on the season. With the loss, Kansas City falls to an identical 5-11 record.
Kansas City took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but Iowa bounced back when QB Brad Banks found WR Jesse Schmidt for the first of 3 touchdowns between the pair. The score and ensuing extra point gave Iowa a 7-6 lead that they would never relinquish during the remainder of the game. The Barnstormers increased their lead to 28-19 as the teams entered the locker room for halftime.
Iowa came out firing in the second half as Banks connected with Schmidt for his third touchdown of the night and increasing the lead to 35-19. With the score, Schmidt now holds the Barnstormers all-time single season TD reception record with 47. His 47 TD receptions are also good for the most in the AFL. Leading now by two scores, Iowa looked to their defense to secure the victory and the unit delivered. Command quarterback Steve Wasil was under constant pressure all night long. The Barnstormers defense forced a season high 5 turnovers during the contest.
Kansas City rallied in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just 8 points. However, a pressured Wasil forced a throw into coverage that was intercepted by Iowa’s Cameron McGlenn in the game’s final minute. This marks the second time this season that the Barnstormers have secured a last-minute victory due to a McGlenn interception. Iowa’s offense ran out the final :43 seconds, sending the Wellmark Field crowd of 8,347 home happy for the second consecutive week.
The Barnstormers are back on the road next weeks, as they head to Milwaukee to battle the Iron on Friday, July 15. Iowa then returns home to close out the 2011 season when they host the Georgia Force on Saturday, July 23 at 7:05pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the Wells Fargo Arena box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.
