Iowa Barnstormers Roster Recap
DES MOINES – With just under one week remaining until the start of the Indoor Football season, the Barnstormers have been hard at work to recruit a talented roster. Head Coach Ameer Ismail has announced the signing of 38 players who will be attending the team’s Training Camp.
“I want this team to come to camp in tremendous shape,” said Coach Ismail. “I expect players to be sponges and absorb new information, to get better every day of training camp, and to be coachable.”
Of the 38 players signed, seven will be returning from last season’s roster. Among the returning players is veteran wide receiver Connor Hollenbeck. Hollenbeck is entering his second season with the Iowa Barnstormers. Joining Hollenbeck on offense is fellow wide receiver Raheem Harvey, running back Jamal Tyler, and offensive lineman Quante Hines.
On the other side of the ball, defensive backs Jourdan Wickliffe and Jeremy Gloston are returning to the roster, both entering their third seasons with the Barnstormers. Defensive lineman Tony Winslow will also be returning, Winslow quickly made an impact on the d-line after joining the team mid-way through the 2019 season.
The Barnstormers 2020 roster also features a lot of new faces and fresh talent.“Building this year’s roster, I was looking for players who have great attitudes and the drive to be not only the best football players possible, but also the best people.” said Coach Ismail.
New to the Iowa Barnstormers this season will be veteran quarterback Caleb Holbrook who made a name for himself in the CIF (Champions Indoor Football). Kurt Palandech will also be joining the roster at quarterback, bringing his own experience in the IFL and the German Football League. Joining these quarterbacks on offense is veteran wide receiver Brandynn Clark who has experience in both the CIF and the IFL and receiver Carrington Thompson, Jr. who is entering his first season in the IFL after spending two seasons with the West Michigan Ironmen.
Veteran offensive lineman Zachary Fondal will also be joining the Iowa Barnstormers offense at training camp, having four years of indoor experience under his belt. Joining him on the offensive line will be Andrew Erbes and Terry Ewell, both having previously gained experience with the indoor game.
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive back Nate Gaines will be looking to earn his goggles after a successful season in the CIF where he earned honors as First Team All-CIF. Defensive lineman Toni Pulu is also joining the training camp roster having experience in the IFL, NAL, and CFL.
Rounding up the current roster is a group of athletes who will be entering their rookie season in the Indoor Football League, including Brycen Alleyne (RB), Tymere Dubose (DL), and Charles Reid (DB) who all earned contracts after impressing Coach Ismail at the team’s 2020 Open Tryout. They will be joined by fellow rookies Vincent Espinoza (QB), Ryne Griesenauer (WR), Justin Holmes (WR), Tristan Payton (WR), Evan Owens (RB), John Robinson-Woodgett (RB/LB), Joshua Keith (OL), Andrew Marshall, Jr. (OL), Donell Paster (OL), Ameris Caleb Bailey (LB/DB), Jibreel Hazly (LB), Kareem Green (DB), Jamal Marshall (DB), Oscar Opara (DB), Verkedric Vaughns (DB), Donnell Bonds (DL), Sha-ki Holines (DL), Tony Jones (DL), and CJ Thornton (DL).
“I built my roster with young, hungry, coachable players who are willing to do what it takes to grow, win, and get moved up into higher leagues,” said Coach Ismail. “They also all have the want and drive to be leaders in the community which is equally important."
