Barnstormers Game Preview vs. Blizzard
DES MOINES, IA - Despite not turning the ball over in a game for the first time this season, the Iowa Barnstormers narrowly fell to the Arizona Rattlers and will look to make amends facing a familiar foe this weekend.
The Barnstormers (0-4) will make the trip up north to Green Bay for the second time this season to take on the Blizzard (3-1) Friday at 6:05 pm.
While Iowa fell in the first matchup between these two teams 35-24, the Barnstormers have since begun to pick up momentum.
Rookie quarterback
Kyle King took the reigns in his first career start against the Arizona Rattlers last week, throwing for 171 yards and four touchdowns while also finding the end zone twice on the ground. Wide receiver
Quian Williams also continued to dominate in the receiving category, racking up a team-leading 85-yards and two touchdowns.
An unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt ended up being the deciding factor of last weekend's game and the Iowa defense struggled to contain Arizona's high-powered offense, narrowly missing the win 49-47.
In Green Bay's 48-35 win against the Sioux Falls Storm last weekend, quarterback Max Meylor did it all for the Blizzard. He threw for 150 yards, three touchdowns and a 65% completion percentage. Meylor also had three rushing touchdowns and a team-leading 63 yards on the ground. Wide receiver Lowell Patron, who hurt the Barnstormers defense in their last contest, had 104 yards and two scores through the air.
As much credit as the offense deserved, the Green Bay defense played lights out. Defensive linemen Rafiq Abdul-Wahid and L.J. Lovelace Jr. each had two sacks and linebacker Jaylan Alexander had an interception.
Two untimely turnovers cost Iowa a chance at capturing its first win of the season in their last trip to the Badger State. A fumble and turnover on downs on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter exacerbated what was an otherwise efficient game.Â
If the Barnstormers are able to cut down their turnovers and exploit the Blizzards' defensive weaknesses including the fact that they give up the third most rushing yards in the Indoor Football League, they will have the chance to win. However, the team will have to do it with the raucous Resch Center crowd against them.Â
Fans can tune into the game live on the Indoor Football League's official YouTube channel. Live updates will also be posted on the Iowa Barnstormers Twitter account.
