Derrell Johnson-Koulianos Joins Iowa Barnstormers

01/20/2012 2:10 PM -
DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers made a big move in the AFL free agent market Wednesday afternoon as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Mike Hohensee announced that all-Big Ten wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (6-1, 200) joins Iowa for the 2012 season.   Best known to Iowa Hawkeye fans statewide as “DJK”, Johnson-Koulianos arrives in Des Moines after a four-year, record-setting career at the University of Iowa.

Johnson-Koulianos was one of the most prolific receivers in Hawkeye history as he recorded 173 receptions for 2,616 yards and 17 touchdowns. The career receptions and receiving yards were all-time University of Iowa records until eclipsed by Marvin McNutt during the Hawkeyes’ 2011 season.  Johnson-Koulianos’ 2010 season earned him All-Big Ten First-Team (Coaches) recognition.

Coach Hohensee noted that the athletic Johnson-Koulianos will also be a weapon in the Barnstormers return game as the former Hawkeye electrified fans with over 1,500 career kick return yards and two touchdowns during his collegiate career. “We’re excited to have DJK join the Barnstormers family. We feel someone with his skills will be able to produce immediate results for us,” said Hohensee.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to come back to my home away from home, and once again play in front of the great fans of Iowa”, stated Johnson-Koulianos. “I don’t think I ever really understood what Iowa was all about until I played here and I can’t wait to perform again at a high-level for all of my fans.

Iowa team officials said Johnson-Koulianos will be assigned his familiar #15 jersey for the 2012 season.

In conjunction with the signing of Johnson-Koulianos, the Barnstormers have also announced a meet and greet event that will take place Thursday, January 19th at 5:30pm at OverTime Neighborhood Sports and Grub, located at 4810 86th st. in Urbandale.  Johnson-Koulianos will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs.  The event is FREE and open to the public.
