DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers are proud to announce the winners of their 2011 team awards. Seven awards were handed out a private post-season party on Monday night after a vote by Barnstormer players, coaches and administrative staff. Winners are listed below.
2011 Team MVP: Jesse Schmidt
Offensive Player of the Year: Brad Banks
Defensive Player of the Year: Cameron McGlenn
Rookie of the Year: Marquis Hamilton
Ironman of the Year: Charles Johnson
Lineman of the Year: Rodney Filer
Special Teams Player of the Year: Nich Pertuit
Wide Receiver Jesse Schmidt was voted as the Barnstormers 2011 team MVP. The 2011 season was his second with the Barnstormers following 3 standout years with the Quad City Steamwheelers of af2. The Buena Vista alumni broke every significant Barnstormers receiving record as he compiled 168 receptions, 2,171 yards and 55 touchdowns. He is a strong candidate for AFL receiver of the year.
Quarterback Brad Banks was voted Offensive Player of the Year. The University of Iowa alumni appeared in 15 games during his rookie season, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 82 touchdowns. His 107.3 passer rating ranks him among the top quarterbacks in the AFL.
Defensive Back Cameron McGlenn was voted Defensive Player of the Year. McGlenn shined as a rookie, as he was the only member of the Barnstormers defense to start all 18 games. He finished the season leading the team with 89.5 tackles, 9 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries.
Wide Receiver Marquis Hamilton joined the Barnstormers halfway through the season and became an immediate contributor to the team. He finished third on the team with 69 receptions for 671 yards and 12 touchdowns, good enough to win him the team’s Rookie of the Year award.
Defensive Lineman Charles Johnson was voted as the Barnstormers Ironman of the year. Johnson started 16 games at defensive tackle and filled in as needed on the offensive line. Johnson also contributed on special teams. He was often called into duty with little or no notice, making him the ultimate team player and Ironman.
Fullback Rodney Filer was named the Barnstormers lineman of the year. The 12 year AFL vet played in 17 games and was the leader of the ‘Stormers offensive line. Filer also rushed for 146 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2011, and went over the 1,000 yard mark for his career.
Kicker Nich Pertuit joined the Barnstormers 8 games into the season and stabilized their kicking situation. After going through 4 different kickers in the first 7 weeks of the season, the Barnstormers finally found their man. Pertuit gained confidence week by week and finished the season with 71 points, going 6 for 11 on field goals and 53 of 64 on PAT attempts. During a four week stretch at the end of the season, he successfully made 25 straight PAT’s.
The Barnstormers would like to thank all of their fans for a great 2011 season. Planning is already underway for the Barnstormers 2012 season.
