Last Second Field Goal Dooms Barnstormers Again

04/23/2011 8:50 PM -
Tulsa, OK. - Costly mistakes on special teams turned out the be the difference as the Barnstormers fell to the Tulsa Talons 61-60 at the BOK Center on Saturday night. Talons Kicker Juan Bongarra kicked a 41 yard field goal as time expired to give Tulsa the victory. With the loss, the Barnstormers fall to 2-4 on the season, while Tulsa improves to an identical 2-4 record.

Both teams came started strong offensively as each would score touchdowns on their first four possessions. Barnstormers QB Brad Banks matched Talons QB Matt Bassuener throw for throw throughout the first half as each compiled four touchdown passes. The Barnstormers halted Tulsa’s final drive of the half as Bassuener was intercepted by Iowa’s Patrick Stoudamire in the end zone. Stoudamire’s interception kept the Barnstormers within one point 28-27 as the teams entered the locker room.

Following the break, Iowa took their first lead of the game 34-38 when Banks scored on a 5 yard run on the first possession of the second half. However, the back and forth battle continued for the rest of the third quarter with Tulsa holding a narrow 42-40 with 15 minutes remaining.

Iowa was able to gain a 10 point advantage by way of a Cameron McGlenn interception and three more touchdown passes by Banks, before Tulsa rallied to cut the lead to two at 60-58. New Iowa Kicker Garrett Morgan had a chance to redeem himself after two earlier misses on PAT’s but his 33 yard field goal attempt sailed wide left with 25 seconds remaining. The result set up Bongarra for the game-winning kick, marking the second straight game that the Barnstormers have lost on a field-goal as time expired. On a bright note for Iowa, Banks accounted for all nine of the Barnstormers touchdowns (8TD pass, 1TD rush) continuing his stellar play at quarterback.

The Barnstormers now return home for a battle against the Philadelphia Soul (1-5) next Saturday, April 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm at Wellmark Field in Des Moines. The game features many storylines, including the return of former Barnstormers Ryan Vena and Tanner Varner, who are now members of the Soul. Great seats remain on sale now starting at just $15.00. You can purchase yours at the Wells Fargo Arena Box office, by calling the Barnstormers at 515.633.2255 or online at www.theiowabarnstormers.com.
