Barnstormers Announce 2018 Coaching Staff
DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers have announced details about their 2018 coaching staff. Joining Coach Wooten this season will be Marcus Coleman, Malcolm Nelson, and Hurtis Chinn.
Head Coach Dixie Wooten is returning to the Barnstormers for his second season with the team. With over a dozen years of combined playing and coaching experience, Wooten took over as Head Coach for the Barnstormers in 2017 bringing a wealth of knowledge to the organization. Last season, Coach Wooten led the Barnstormers to a 13-3 regular season record making it into the playoffs for the first time since 2009 earning him IFL honors as Coach of the Year.
“Last year was a great year,” said Wooten. “We hit a lot of our team goals for the season and we learned how to win close games against very good teams. We came up short of the main goal, but a 13-3 record and a trip to the conference championship game was a great accomplishment.”
From a coaching standpoint, Coach Wooten plans to carry the momentum from last season into 2018. “From the beginning, when we brought in men from all over the country and they came together as a team they had to put their pride aside and let us coach them hard,” said Wooten. “As coaches, we always kept the same mindset from day one so our players bought in to our plan. The base we set was the biggest part of making us successful.”
The chemistry of the coaching staff was also a big attribute to the team’s success. Coach Wooten is excited to have Marcus Coleman and Malcolm Nelson joining him once again this season. “We have fun being around each other, we believe in each other, and we are there for each other no matter what. We make sure we are all on the same page to be successful.”
Coleman returns to the Iowa Barnstormers staff for his second season as the Defensive Coordinator and the team’s Defensive Backs Coach. Coleman is a former NFL defensive back, who spent time with the New York Jets, Houston Texans, and the Dallas Cowboys during his 10 year career. In 2010, Coleman was honored by his alma mater as he was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletics Hall of Fame.
Nelson returns to the Iowa Barnstormers staff for his second season as the Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Nelson has over 15 years of combined coaching experience in high school, college, and indoor football. While coaching at Livingstone College, Nelson earned the opportunity to coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011 as part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship. With the Steelers, Nelson was able to gain experience as a special teams coach.
“We will have a top defense again,” said Wooten. “Marcus Coleman and Malcolm Nelson are two of the most hardworking people I have ever seen. They are very detailed and they hold everybody around them accountable. I am lucky to have those two great men as coaches.”
New to the Barnstormers coaching staff this season is Hurtis Chinn, who joins the team as Assistant Head Coach and the team’s Wide Receivers Coach. Chinn spent six years as a member of the Nebraska Danger coaching staff, where he began as an Assistant Coach before earning the title of Head Coach this past season. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Chinn was a standout IFL receiver appearing with the River City Rage and the Nebraska Danger.
“Chinn will bring a lot of football knowledge to the organization,” said Wooten. “As a player he was one of the smartest and as a coach his football IQ grew even bigger. He is a guy that people will listen to because he is up front and truthful. He has a gift to push players and get the best out of them. We are excited to have him on our coaching staff this year.”
